On 14 February 1984 the people of the South Roscommon community of Drum held a public meeting to decide if there was need for a community centre in the locality. A committee was formed at that meeting, and some of those first members remain involved today.
The centre opened its doors to the public in March 1988, and continues to serve the people of the greater Athlone area by offering affordable amenities in a convenient location. In a region that has experienced substantial growth in recent years, the centre provides sports facilities to local clubs, schools and various groups in the area, as well as providing a venue for other social meetings, such as weekly bingo. We also host the Community of Drum website www.drum.ie Your community centre...As a voluntary organisation, the need for people to support the centre is as great now as it was when the facility was first proposed back in the early 1980s. We are always looking for new volunteers to become involved in running the centre. This can include helping out at the weekly bingo, and also the general management of the centre. Please do not hesitate to make contact with us if you are interested. Even just come along during bingo some Friday night. We’d love to see you. Our FacilitiesThe main sports hall is home to a variety of activities and the maple floor is lined for many sports including indoor soccer, basketball, badminton and volleyball. It can also be used for large lectures, meetings, etc. The stage is ideal for plays and performances, while the smaller function rooms are regularly used for dancing classes and martial arts. The lounge area upstairs at the front of the building provides an ideal venue for meetings of community groups and organisations at a central location. It also includes kitchen facilities, which are often used to host coffee mornings and fund-raisers, and are ideal for table quizzes or card games. During the school term, the centre is used by local schools during the day, and is then available for hire from 6pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday. Caretaker Michael Glynn is available to take bookings by phone or in person at the centre each evening. Other times (e.g. weekends) may be available upon request. We offer very competitive rates for use of facilities, please contact us for further details. The sports hall availability may be limited at certain times due to long-term bookings. Some events may require consent of the board before booking can be taken/confirmed.
