About the 2011 Pilgrimage


The Annual Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place from Sunday August 28th to Friday September 2nd 2011, under the leadership of Most Rev. Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin. Pilgrimage Directors: Rev. Ray Milton & Rev. Hugh McGonagle.

In 2011 the Pilgrimage comprises approximately 500 people, including over 50 assisted pilgrims who are cared for by a staff of over 60 people including approximately 4 doctors, 25 nurses, 18 handmaids, and 23 brancardiers. The Pilgrimage also includes 75 young people (from ages 16 to 21) who are looked after by 15 youth leaders. The remainder are regular pilgrims from all over the diocese - led by Bishop Jones and priests from various parishes.

A number of cameras are located throughout the grounds of the Shrine in Lourdes, and these can be viewed via the official Lourdes website. There is a new high-quality live video stream from the Grotto available on TV Lourdes. There are also webcams showing the Rosary Basilica, the Crowned Virgin statue, the Processional pathway and videos of the daily Rosary from the Grotto and the daily Torchlight Procession. All of these are available though the official Lourdes website here.

Mass from the Grotto will be celebrated by Bishop Jones on Tuesday 30th August at 7.30am Irish time (8.30am French time) and will be available to watch and hear via the TV Lourdes website.

About the 2008 Pilgrimage

The Annual Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes took place from Thursday August 28th to Tuesday September 2nd 2008, under the leadership of Most Rev. Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin. Pilgrimage Directors: Rev. Ray Milton & Rev. Hugh McGonagle.

In 2008 the Pilgrimage comprised 1270 people, including almost 70 assisted pilgrims who were cared for by a staff of over 60 people including approximately 4 doctors, 25 nurses, 18 handmaids, and 25 brancardiers. The Pilgrimage also included 75 young people (from ages 16 to 21) who were looked after by 10 youth leaders. The remainder were regular pilgrims from all over the diocese - led by Bishop Jones and 18 priests from various parishes.

The Annual Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes took place from Friday August 28th to Wednesday September 2nd 2009, under the leadership of Most Rev. Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin. Pilgrimage Directors: Rev. Ray Milton & Rev. Hugh McGonagle.

In 2009 the Pilgrimage comprised 650 people, including over 60 assisted pilgrims who were cared for by a staff of over 60 people including approximately 4 doctors, 25 nurses, 18 handmaids, and 25 brancardiers. The Pilgrimage also included over 80 young people (from ages 16 to 21) who were looked after by 14 youth leaders. The remainder were regular pilgrims from all over the diocese - led by Bishop Jones and priests from various parishes.

About the 2010 Pilgrimage


The Annual Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes took place from Saturday August 28th to Thursday September 2nd 2010, under the leadership of Most Rev. Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elphin. Pilgrimage Directors: Rev. Ray Milton & Rev. Hugh McGonagle.

In 2010 the Pilgrimage compriseds approximately 700 people, including over 60 assisted pilgrims who were cared for by a staff of over 60 people including approximately 4 doctors, 25 nurses, 18 handmaids, and 25 brancardiers. The Pilgrimage also included 65 young people (from ages 16 to 21) who are looked after by 15 youth leaders. The remainder were regular pilgrims from all over the diocese - led by Bishop Jones and priests from various parishes.

The following information is provided for guidance purposes only. Price subject to change annually.

Cost

The cost is €684 inclusive. (2010)

The cost includes:

  • Air travel from Knock to Lourdes return.
  • Transfer and assistance between Lourdes airport and your hotel on arrival/departure.
  • Full board and accommodation in Lourdes.
  • Lourdes Hotel tax and French Government tax.
  • Free Insurance cover included up to 85yrs.
  • Coach Trip to the City of the Poor.
  • Pilgrimage Badge.
  • Representatives from Joe Walsh Tours/CARA will ensure all pilgrims receive a very high standard of service throughout the pilgrimage.
  • Irish Government air departure tax.
  • New VAT on tour operations within the EU from 1st January 2010.

Not included:

Single room supplement @ €175 for duration of 5 nights.

Booking Procedure:

All Bookings on the Pilgrimage should be made through Joe Walsh Tours, 8/11 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. Tel: 01-2410810 / 01-2410800. No booking is definite until they have received a completed booking form and €200 non-refundable deposit and until this deposit is receipted by their office. The required minimum deposit of €200 per person is NON-REFUNDABLE on cancellation of booking.

Assisted Pilgrims Section

Assisted Pilgrims (who may be sick or invalided or simply require some assistance) and who would like to travel with the special section for the sick should apply for an application form to Rev. Ray Milton, Drum Parish Office, Drum, Athlone, Co. Roscommon. Tel: 090-6437125. This special section is accommodated at the new Accueil Notre Dame (hostel for the sick in Lourdes). Very Important: Acceptance for travel with the special section for the sick is subject to approval of the Pilgrimage Medical Board.

Note:

The Standard Booking Form should not be used by those who wish to travel on the official Assisted Pilgrims section staying at the hospital in Lourdes.
The Elphin Pilgrimage provide exclusive medical & helper assistance to the Assisted Pilgrims Section ONLY. If medical assistance becomes necessary for any pilgrim staying in hotel accomodation in Lourdes, local French medical assistance should be called for through the reception staff at the hotel.

Insurance Cover

Upper-age limit 85 yrs. 86-94 yrs will incur a premium of €25. Wheelchairs are not covered under the travel insurance.

Important

It is vitally important to complete a Medical Declaration Form if you have a medical condition which has required medical advice, treatment, medication or hospitalisation during the last 18 months. The form can be obtained from Joe Walsh Tours.
